Some thoughts from Pastor Bob Smoker:
Why
would a guy give up a week of vacation and bear the expense to
participate in a GBB annual event? An elderly observer eloquently
and adequately answered that question: “You are giving these boys an
invaluable experience.” We had just arrived at Chaffey’s Lock and
were busy setting up camp beside the lock when a car pulled into the
parking lot. The elderly couple sat there and watched for about 5
minutes then called me over to ask who we were and what we were
doing. We had a very pleasant extended conversation as I described
the ministry of GBB and that we were from Indiana, Ohio, and
Pennsylvania. The husband told me he was a retired corporate
executive. He then went on to tell of the time when he was faced
with the reality of his alcohol addiction and that his “spiritual
life was shot.” In the course of recovering from alcoholism he
accepted Jesus Christ as savior. He became emotional when he told
me, “I wish I was given when I was young what these boys are getting
from you men. You are giving these boys an invaluable experience.”
There it is. That’s the ultimate reason why a guy would give up a
week of vacation and bear the expense.
